In addition to calculating the size of the Moon (as well as its distance from Earth), we also can determine the size and depth of its various surface features. Challenge four asks you to calculate the size of Mare Imbrium, also known as the "Sea of Showers." See labeled map and moon facts for details.

Suppose we examined an image of a half moon in answering challenge four. Click HERE for a full view. Most images of the Moon will suffice (so long as the mare in question can be seen, and the diameter of the Moon can be measured). Using the information determined in previous challenges, can you calculate the diameter of Mare Imbrium? And, as an added challenge, can you calculate the height of the Appenine Mountains which border Mare Imbrium? (Refer to challenge 5 to answer this question.) Click HERE for more information about the size of Mare Imbrium.
